Today I had my third follow-up visit at the out-patient, burn center at Crozer. While I fully admire and respect the work that is done there, it is one place that I would rather avoid. I have a very difficult time sleeping the night before a burn center visit. Last night, for example, I read an entire novel and finally fell asleep some time around 3.
Today's visit wasn't nearly as painful as my previous visits, but in hindsight, I could have used another pain pill!
The process begins with the removal of the bandages. That alone makes me catch my breath. Then, my good friend the physical therapist proceeds to wash my wounds with disposable washcloths, a special soap and then there's removal of old skin. Sometimes that skin is old and unfeeling, sometimes, not so much! The doctor and the physical therapist examine the wounds, discuss the progress of the healing and then decide how best to move forward regarding the wrapping of wounds, return to work, the need for pain medication and home care of the affected areas.
One of the most painful parts of the entire process is the exposure of the wounds to the air. From this angle things are looking pretty good. Some of the other shots from today were not so easy to look at. Right after this shot was taken, the physical therapist wrapped the wounds and I was sent on my way with a note from the doctor keeping me home yet another week.
Mark and I have a bit of a ritual now. Since the trip to the hospital gets us up and out of the house early, we always stop for a bite to eat on the way home. Today was no exception. We tried the Starview Diner which is not far from home, it was a very pleasant experience all around!
I usually sleep the afternoon away after a visit to the burn center. Healing zaps my body of energy. But today, I had a plan to visit my 2nd grade students as they prepared for the school Halloween Parade. I was so happy to see them, and I could tell that they were happy to see me. I can't wait to get back to school and work. I am afraid that the days may prove to be a bit too long but, the only way I will know is to try. So, tomorrow I will rest up and on Wednesday, I will head back to work.
Wish me luck.
