Today I surprised my daughter by showing up at her new office to treat her to lunch. I had birthday gifts in tow, lots of homemade lasagna and pasta sauce as well as a few little treats. Boy was she surprised! I think this may have been the best surprise ever!
You see, most years I get to spend Jason's birthday with him. He lives so close. Jess, on the other hand, is a bit farther away. Usually I get to see her either before or after her birthday, but not right on the day. But this year I did it!
I had such a grand time meeting her co-workers and bosses. They love her, nothing but kind things to say, and they really care for her. She had thought they had forgotten her birthday. But, in fact, one of the men in the office had his wife bake Jessie a birthday cake, how sweet was that. They all sang Happy Birthday to her and enjoyed a little bit of a party on the 76th floor of the Empire State Building. The perfect setting!
Being 26 in New York is not always easy. It can be rather intimidating and over-whelming. Some days are better than others and some days are best not to be remembered. Jess is negotiating this tricky territory with grace, charm and good humor. Best of all, she is just a good person. She is radiant and I couldn't be prouder of her.
So today, here's to Jessica, my youngest. Ever since that beautiful April day she showed up she has been the light of my life. Always pushing me to be my best and always being true to herself. Love you sweetie!
