Tuesday found us making the final preparations for parent visitation day. We have such fun when the parents come in to join us. First we show them a little bit of our "normal" routine, including Daily 5 choice, then we switch things up just a bit to engage the parents with our classroom.
In writing we read, Millie and the Macy's Parade. This prompts a conversation about traditions and family times. Generally the students write about their favorite memory including details filled in by mom or dad. The book is also well crafted and the students really enjoy the alliteration as well as the sing songy rhythm of the writing.
Next we read our Poem of the Day. Since the theme of the day is Thanksgiving we share, The Turkey Shot Out of the Oven, by Jack Prelutsky. We talk about gratitude and reflect on what we are most grateful for. We right our notes on leaves and add them to the gratitude tree I've made in the hall.
Finally, our morning ends, with our class' performance of "Turkey Takes a Stand."
This year we also found a craft that introduced our second graders to persuasive writing, Turkeys on Strike! What a great activity! The kids had a blast and it surely fit the theme of the year! I sure hope the parents enjoy them as much as the students loved creating them!
