Tomorrow we will celebrate Groundhog Day. It's a big thing here at school, bigger than in most schools I think. You see, one of our teachers actually grew up in Punxsutawney, and she thinks Groundhog Day is the biggest holiday of the year. I'd like to think that we don't encourage her but...
This flag is hung in our hallway on our first day back to school in January. Signs and posters that carry an uneasy sense of forboding, "Beware of the Shadow" and "The Shadow Knows" start popping up all over the building. We sometimes even find them in the supply closet, the copy room and the teachers' lounge.
Then there are these guys, one at a time they start gracing the windowsill.
But they don't all fit. Some take up residence in other teacher's classrooms. An occasional student will be seen babysitting one of these precocious rodents during indoor recess.
It seems they are like rabbits in their ability to pro-create.
Then we read about Groundhog Day, we gather data about the Groundhog's rate of success in his predictions and then we write opinion pieces based on the data we have collected. All of this is related to the Common Core.
Yup, Groundhog Day is pretty big around here. Today we recieved an email reminding us of today's dress code, our Ground Hog Day t-shirts and necklaces straight from Punxsutawney.
This is all tongue in cheek of course, but with our friend's father being one of the gentlemen wearing a top hat that chilly morning, we feel strangely connected to all things Phil. It is good fun and we look forward to it every year. We wouldn't dare show up without our appropriate attire. Here's hoping she didn't forget to make the traditional hog cookies!
