After working all day and co-teaching a workshop until 6 I finally made it to my Pineapple Class! What fun! I have not been to a quilt class in ages. There were just three of us in the class and each quilt looks so very different. One was being done all scrappy and one was being done all black and white with a red center square! Each was so beautiful!
I am still trying to decide if I want the darker color to be prominent or if I want the white to stand out. I have time to decide - I think I have about 15 quilts to finish before I get to this one!
Unfortunately, each time I head to The Little Shop, I always find something I that inspires a new quilt. I did not buy any fabric, but isn't this pink and grey gorgeous?
Such a fun way to celebrate another birthday! I think I will do this for my 56th! There was not a great deal of light, but you get the point! A great time was had by all!
Well, it seems I am a bowling failure - but any time I get to spend with my nieces is a bonus to me!
Other than the fact that I put the '8' upside down, this week came together really quickly. One reason for that is the fact that I was dealing with a stomach virus at the end of the week and not many photos were taken.
There's the upside down '8' that will drive me crazy until I fix it! Sunday brought waffles, Mark likes his with bananas and peanut butter. Me, just syrup and cinnamon sugar! I love the Valentine's Day card peeking through from the week before! On the bottom a photo of a little something I pulled together for my snail mail pen pal, just until I can really spend a bit of time creating something a bit more. The photo on the bottom right shows the footprints of a couple of birds that came right up to the door one snowy morning last week. I wonder if they tried to knock!
Above you catch a glimpse of Mark cooking dinner, something he does quite often! I spent Wednesday, before feeling really ill, sewing together the center 4-patches for my pineapple class that I never made it to - there is always this Thursday! Friday, the last day of the week, the weather really warmed up. I was feeling really lousy as we headed off to work but I am glad I decided to take a picture of the fog. I just love mornings like that where you feel the temperature changing! Saturday, feeling much better, we took a ride over to Haddon Township to shop at a local jewelry store for a special gift for Amanda's 16th birthday!
All in all it was a very simple week. Not feeling well really caused me to slow down and sometimes that is a good thing!
Tomorrow I will be linking up with Jessica Turner over at The Mom Creative. If you are the least bit interested in Project Life, I encourage to stop over at Becky Higgins' site and check out all of the inspiration!
Today we were on the hunt for a special gift for Miss Amanda's 16th birthday. Fortunately, we were able to shop local to find what we wanted, so happy for that!
It was such a gorgeous day we headed to Station Avenue in Haddon Heights. The perfect afternoon to explore the shops and enjoy the sunshine.
There was not very much snow left on the ground. Just a few spots here and there. Mark was able to walk around in short sleeves and I didn't need my gloves, which I always wear starting in October!
The sky was that beautiful clear blue that we are fortunate to experience in the winter. The sunshine was crisp and warm. We have not been out walking in quite a while and it felt good to stretch our legs and explore.
Haddon Heights is one of those older towns that grew up along the train route that took people from Philadelphia to Atlantic City and the coast. There are signs posted explaining the growth of the town and important locations. It was fun to learn something new and accomplish our shopping goal!
I need to decide how I am going to proceed with my pineapple quilt, class is tomorrow evening! I ironed and cut strips of fabric and decided to go ahead and make a 4-patch just in case I decide to go with the controlled scrappy look of warm and cool tones.
I needed to be sure that my 4-patch blocks squared up to 2.5", because I am not good with measurements on the fly I made them a little bigger and then trimmed them down. I chose the red floral and the blue floral because the directions call for a red center and the florals include other colors which I will be using in the quilt. I made only two 4-patch units because I am not sure how this will go and the expectation for the 2 nights of class is that we will finish 2 blocks. After that, I can decide what I would like to do!
Right now, this is an idea of what it will look like:
When I take a picture of both options, I am still not totally convinced. See what I mean:
Oh well, tomorrow is a busy day. After work it is physical therapy and then immediately off to my quilt class. I am packing my bag and leaving the difficult decisions until later!
And so, another 100th day of school has come and gone. This morning my students and I were greeted by this wonderful banner made by my incredible student teacher:
Today we were blessed with a delayed opening. Unfortunately, we had a full days worth of activities and lessons planned. What to do?
We were able to start implementing Math Daily 5 today, a little rocky at first, but I am sure we will get the hang of it. We also started, thanks again to my student teacher, a daily reflection. The thought is that the students will write on a 3x3 stickie note, at the end of the day, something that "stuck" with them. We have the students set weekly goals but their ability to reflect at the end of the week was not really improving. Brittany thought that if we get them in the habit of reflecting quickly at the end of each day, Friday reflections will become less challenging.
Today's thoughts were much better than yesterdays, perhaps we are making progress!
Remember our snowflake bulletin board? Well, that is filled with snowflakes and statements about what is unique about the students.
While we are discussing culture and recognizing our similarities and differences, we thought it would be a good idea to encourage "acts of kindness". There were a couple of boards on Pinterest promoting this, I did not happen to see any of them, but we came up with this...
We began by reading Each Kindness, written by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by EB Lewis. We are asking the students to find ways to share acts of kindness. We are recoding those acts of kindness on small hearts that the students decorate and we started adding them to the board late today. The students seem very excited and are delighted when they see their heart posted on the board. When I have a moment I will share what the board is looking like!
Well, that's not all that's going on in second grade today, but I think it is a good place to stop for this evening. Tonight I wish you all the energy and enthusiasm of a second grader, it is contagious!
Easy peasy - this week came together so easily! Of course it helped that I started the week with a delayed opening. As I have mentioned before, I would much rather have a delayed opening than a snow day. Tuesday happened to be a full day of work, as did Wednesday. As luck would have it, the snow started Wednesday evening and continued most of the day on Thursday. Translated, that means another snow day!
Since it was the day before Valentines Day, I spent the day addressing my cards and making up little gifts for my second graders. Of course my cards didn't make it in the mail until Friday but, I blame it on the snow!
Friday we had a delayed opening, a couple of Valentines Day parties and a mystery reader. It was a great day! I stayed at work until 6 and then Mark and I headed over to Fridays where I treated myself to a mojito! Yum!
We had a little snow on Saturday. I was able to stay home and sew all day. It was such a treat. We had reservations for a late dinner at Catelli Duo which is right down the street from us. A delicious dinner with my favorite Valentine! All in all, a perfect winter week!
Today we were literally snowed in. The door could not be opened. I almost couldn't ge the shovel out in order to start our big dig. We are anticipating another several inches of snow overnight. Sure hope I do not have to dig myself out first thing in the morning!
