Jessica texted and asked me out on a date. Her intent, to purchase me a decent mascara that would not run all over my face when I had a hot flash. The reality is that I have not been happy with my mascara for quite a while. I have actually stopped wearing mascara just because of the racoon eyes that it gives me! We met at Ulta, took care of the mascara business then set out on an adventure.
Okay, it was just dinner. It felt like an adventure. We enjoyed Korean food at Southgate and then treated ourselves to ice cream cones at Big Gay Ice Cream.
Between the stores, we walked and talked. It felt good to catch up with each other. It felt good to have it be just the two of us. I am very happy that she lives closer to us. I know that her location may change, but for now I will enjoy the closeness. A quick hop on the high speed line and I can be with my darling daughter or my handsome son, in 20 minutes. As far as I’m concerned, that is the best part of them living in Philly!
Most of my time this past week has been spent at the shop. Boy has it felt good. I feel like I have a better understanding of things although, what I understand does not hold a candle to all of the wonderful women I work with each day. I have decided that beginning next week I will spend at least a couple of days at home, managing the household side of the business as well as trying to get a handle on the yard and laundry. Balance, it is all about balance. In any case, I find that I cannot commit to too much in any one day. I get dizzy, seriously!
While at home, lately, I find that I am not getting much of anything done. Usually, I sleep. I sleep well, but I am always disappointed about what I do not actually get done! We had planned on doing so much work around the house that I feel behind and it is only the first week of summer!
It’s funny how time seems to move so quickly. My brother-in-law would always say around the fourth of July, “summer’s almost over.” If I am not more careful, I will start feeling the same way!
The joke of the evening was that I waited until Beer Week was over. Seriously, it wasn’t a joking matter. I have been suffering with a cold since last Wednesday. I should have noticed the warning signs but I didn’t. It is not in my nature to slow down. The cold, as it were, took the traditional route. Meaning that by Friday, I had no voice. I powered through a full busy day at the shop on Saturday, and woke up feeling relatively energetic on Sunday.
The problem, I just couldn’t get anything done. The minute I put myself upright I became nauseous, dizzy and unable to move. And it got worse. By the time Mark arrived home from work I was on the floor unable to move. The long and the short of it, vertigo. These two crazy kids entertained us almost the entire time we were in the hospital. I couldn’t ask for a better support group.
Summer that is, summer is getting close. The solstice is on the 20th, but my last day of school with students is the 16th. As far as I’m concerned, summer starts the minute I do not need to report to school. Oh, the first day is the 20th. See how well that all worked out! There are a couple of things I am really looking forward to this year. First, spending more time at the shop. I think that is going to be my all time favorite part of summer. Second, time off with my hubby. I feel that the past few months have us passing like ships in the night. It will be good to spend some quality time together!
Pleased to report that report cards are completed. I will review them once before submission but I am feeling quite accomplished this evening. The end of the school year is fast approaching and I must say, I’m not quite ready. Every year I try very hard to purge the unnecessary and organize what I know I need. Unfortunately, I was good at purging until this evening. When the thunderstorms arrived I was all set to pack up for the night. I did vote. I did take care of a few end of year gifts, but for the most part, I was struggling to accomplish anything.
Now that report cards are complete, I feel like I can slow down just a bit. Tomorrow is field day and that takes us one step closer. Truth be told, there are really only 4 full days of school left. The students will have three half days after that and will finish on the 16th. The teachers will have a half day on the 16th but will then head back for a full day on the 17th. While I am ready to be done with this school year, I know that this is one class that I will really miss. They are a wonderful group of children, kind and caring. I will miss my daily hugs and their silly little jokes. I am looking forward to spending time in the shop and only working one job for a bit. Just 7 days.
In my world it means just one thing, stress. You see, I am not very good at keeping an organized classroom. I am a pile-er. Is that even a word? I tend to put things in piles. I have lots of piles and unfortunately, I often forget which pile I place things in. That means, in June, I spend a great deal of time trying to figure out where I have placed those things that I don’t need until June. Oy!
So, this year, in addition to trying to finish report cards and the students’ portfolios, I am also trying to get the quilt shop ready for the Row x Row Experience. If you are a shop hopper you know what I’m talking about. If you are not a shop hopper, the Row x Row is a nationwide quilt shop hop. I have been thinking about this since last October. It is an opportunity to get our shop’s name out there in a real and tangible way. Quilter’s travel from all over to visit shops that have a phrase or a row that they like. Today our license plates arrived...
but our row, that’s not done. It needs to get done, so do report cards and portfolios. Oh well, I had better get back to school work. Soon school will be over and I will have managed to get everything done, on time. Soon it will be summer and my only obligation will be the shop. I must say, I am really looking forward to that!
